White cast, tint and sunscreen protection are not the same thing
White cast is an appearance outcome, tint is a formula choice and protection is a tested claim. Related optics do not make the three interchangeable.

A white cast tells you how a sunscreen looks on skin—not how well it protects. A tint may improve appearance and, in a specifically tested formula, add visible-light attenuation. Neither replaces SPF and UVA evidence.

Why cast happens
Particulate ingredients can scatter visible light and leave a pale, grey or purple appearance, especially when the shade contrasts with the wearer’s skin tone. The same metal-oxide films still attenuate UV mainly through absorption rather than simply reflecting it. Optical study
Cast can affect protection indirectly: if the appearance makes someone apply too little, the real film no longer matches the tested amount.
Tint can solve appearance without proving protection
Iron oxide pigments can reduce a white or grey look and broaden shade options. They are colourants, however, and the finished formula must support any visible-light claim.
