The labels describe filter families
“Mineral” or “inorganic” normally refers to zinc oxide and titanium dioxide particles. “Organic” describes carbon-based filters such as avobenzone, bemotrizinol, DHHB and ethylhexyl triazone. “Chemical” is commonly used for the second group but is a poor safety contrast: every sunscreen is made of chemicals.
Mineral filters do not work only like mirrors
Measurements of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide sunscreen films found that UV attenuation came mainly from absorption, with only a small contribution from reflection. Optical study Scattering still affects appearance, which helps explain why particle-containing formulas can leave a white or grey cast.
The trade-offs belong to the whole formula
Mineral formulas may be visibly challenging on deeper skin tones; organic-filter formulas can be easier to make transparent. Either type can feel elegant, heavy, drying, oily or irritating depending on the vehicle. Eye sting is also product-specific—not a reliable verdict on an entire filter family.
