Sunscreen and hyperpigmentation: where visible light fits
A careful guide to UV protection, tinted sunscreens and visible-light evidence in melasma and pigment-prone skin—without promising that sunscreen treats every dark mark.

Quick answer
For pigment concerns, start with reliable broad-spectrum UV protection. Tinted products containing suitable pigments such as iron oxides may add visible-light attenuation, which has specific evidence in melasma contexts. That does not mean every tint treats pigmentation or that one shade works for every skin tone.
Begin with ultraviolet protection
UV exposure can aggravate pigment concerns and undermine a routine aimed at gradual improvement. Broad-spectrum sunscreen, adequate application and physical protection are therefore a foundation—not a complete treatment plan.
If irritation from an aggressive routine creates more inflammation, adding more pigment-targeting actives can be counterproductive. Protecting the barrier and identifying the cause of pigmentation still matter.
Why visible light enters the discussion
Visible light is outside the ultraviolet range measured by standard SPF. Research has examined whether adding visible-light-attenuating pigments to a high-UV-protection formula improves outcomes in melasma.
In one double-blind randomised trial, people receiving treatment for melasma used either a broad-spectrum UV sunscreen or a similar UV sunscreen with iron oxide intended to attenuate near-visible light. That result belongs to the tested formulas, participants and treatment context. It does not establish that:
- any tinted sunscreen provides the same visible-light protection;
- iron oxide position in an ingredient list reveals meaningful performance;
- tint depth predicts protection without testing;
- sunscreen alone treats every type of pigmentation;
- visible light from ordinary screens is equivalent to strong solar exposure.
Tint needs both evidence and a usable shade
The AAD notes that tinted sunscreen containing iron oxide can add protection from visible light in the context of dark spots. AAD But an unusable shade can cause underapplication, patchiness or complete abandonment.
For Indian skin tones, a useful product comparison should record:
- the tint and shade range actually sold in India;
- the declared colourants or pigments;
- any finished-product visible-light test or named method;
- whether the brand claim is direct evidence or general ingredient marketing;
- application observations only when hands-on testing has occurred.
Post-inflammatory marks are not all melasma

What we could not verify
There is no single standard consumer badge on the current Indian products we reviewed that quantifies visible-light protection in the same way SPF reports a UVB-weighted test result. Layer & Strand will not award a visible-light score from colour alone.
Bottom line
Broad-spectrum UV protection is the baseline. A well-matched tinted sunscreen may be relevant when melasma or another pigment concern makes visible-light attenuation important, but the evidence must stay tied to the tested formula. Pigment change that is new, persistent or unclear is a medical question, not a shopping quiz.
