Sunscreen glossary: SPF, PA, UVA and label terms

A plain-language reference for sunscreen test, filter and wear terms used on Indian labels—complete with the limits that short marketing definitions usually omit.

Quick answer

The most useful distinction is between a tested protection result, a formula description and a wear or marketing claim. SPF, UVA-PF and PA refer to protection tests or grades. “Mineral”, “tinted” and “gel” describe aspects of the formula. “All-day”, “sweat-proof” and “non-comedogenic” need their own substantiation and should not be treated as protection results.

This glossary uses Indian-market context where it is available and labels international examples rather than pretending sunscreen terminology is regulated identically everywhere.

Protection measurements

SPF

Sun protection factor is a controlled comparison of the UV dose associated with a defined redness response on protected versus unprotected skin. It is weighted primarily toward UVB-related sunburn protection. SPF is not a number of safe hours. FDA

UVA

Ultraviolet A covers the longer-wavelength portion of ultraviolet radiation used in sunscreen assessment. UVA can contribute to pigment changes and long-term photodamage. SPF alone does not disclose the exact UVA result.

UVB

Ultraviolet B is the shorter-wavelength band more strongly associated with erythema or sunburn in SPF testing. UVA and UVB are both part of the reason sunscreen should sit alongside shade and clothing rather than replace them. WHO

UVA-PF

UVA protection factor is a numerical result from a recognised UVA method. The method and jurisdiction matter. ISO 24443's in-vitro procedure can support UVA-PF and other spectral calculations. ISO 24443

PA

Protection Grade of UVA converts UVA-PF bands into plus signs. In the JCIA framework, PA+ begins at UVA-PF 2 and PA++++ begins at UVA-PF 16. JCIA A grade is a range, not the exact result.

Broad spectrum

A broad-spectrum claim says the product meets the applicable market's criterion across UVA and UVB. The phrase is useful only with its jurisdiction and method; there is no single universal label definition that can be imported without checking.

Critical wavelength

Critical wavelength is calculated from the product's UV absorbance curve and describes the breadth of absorption toward the UVA range. It is not a replacement for SPF or the numerical magnitude of UVA protection. ISO 24443

Wear and application terms

Water resistant

Water resistant should be a defined, time-bounded claim under the applicable method. It does not mean waterproof, towel-proof or unchanged after unlimited swimming and sweating. Follow the current pack's reapplication directions.

Photostability

Photostability describes how well a substance or finished film maintains relevant properties during light exposure under the stated conditions. A claim about one filter does not establish the stability of every finished formulation.

Film formation

Film formation describes how the finished product spreads, sets and creates a layer on skin. It can influence uniformity and wear, but an ingredient list cannot fully predict the resulting film.

Two-finger amount

The two-finger rule is a consumer application shorthand in which product is laid along two fingers. Finger length, nozzle width and formula density vary, so it is not an exact universal volume. The AAD currently describes its face reference as about one teaspoon and approximately the amount covering the index and middle fingers. AAD

Reapplication

Reapplication means applying another adequate layer after time, water, sweat, towel drying or other loss of the film. A fixed interval is not proof that the first application remained intact until that moment.

Filter and formula terms

UV filter

A UV filter is an ingredient permitted for the relevant market and used to absorb, reflect or scatter ultraviolet radiation. Protection belongs to the tested finished product—not merely to the presence of a recognisable filter name.

Mineral or inorganic filter

In consumer sunscreen language, mineral or inorganic usually refers to zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both. The category does not automatically mean non-irritating, cast-free, environmentally superior or more effective.

Organic filter

Organic filter is the more precise chemical-class term often used for filters commonly called “chemical sunscreens”. “Organic” here does not mean certified organic agriculture, and all sunscreen ingredients are chemicals.

Hybrid sunscreen

Hybrid generally means a formula combining inorganic and organic UV filters. It is a product-description convention, not a protection grade.

Tinted sunscreen

A tinted sunscreen contains colour intended to affect visible appearance. Some finished pigmented formulas have been studied for visible-light-related pigmentation outcomes, but tint alone does not prove that benefit.

Iron oxides

Iron oxides are pigments that may contribute colour and visible-light attenuation in a finished formula. Their presence does not reveal concentration, shade match or a tested clinical outcome.

Marketing and suitability language

Non-comedogenic

Non-comedogenic is a manufacturer suitability claim. It cannot guarantee that no individual will develop clogged pores or a breakout, and it is not a UV-protection measurement.

Dermatologically tested

Dermatologically tested says little without a protocol: what was tested, on whom, against which endpoint and with what result? It should not be read as dermatologist-recommended, allergy-proof or suitable for every condition.

Sweat-proof, waterproof and all-day

These absolute-sounding terms need especially careful scrutiny. A defined water-resistance result is more informative than a vague promise, and no label should be used to justify extending exposure. India's cosmetic framework prohibits false or misleading claims. CDSCO

Bottom line

Ask which bucket a term belongs to: protection test, formula description, wear claim or suitability claim. Only then decide what additional evidence is needed. A familiar word on the front of the pack is not automatically a complete answer.
