How sunscreen testing works: SPF, UVA and water resistance

A consumer guide to what sunscreen laboratories measure, why SPF and UVA need separate methods, and what a passing test still cannot predict about everyday wear.

SPF, UVA protection and water resistance are separate measurements. SPF testing estimates protection against UV-induced redness under controlled application. UVA methods evaluate a different part of the spectrum, while water-resistance testing asks whether a claim remains after a defined water procedure. None of them independently predicts comfort, cast, eye sting or how evenly someone will apply the product.

The label compresses a multi-step laboratory process into a few characters. Understanding that compression makes it easier to ask for the right evidence without pretending every report answers every practical question.

SPF is a controlled comparison, not a clock

ISO 24444 specifies an in-vivo method for determining the SPF of a sunscreen product against erythema caused by solar-simulated ultraviolet radiation. At a high level, the laboratory compares the UV dose needed to produce a defined redness response on protected and unprotected test sites. The result depends on controlled product application, irradiation and response assessment.

That is why SPF should not be converted into “SPF 30 means 30 hours”. Outdoor intensity, coverage, rubbing, sweat and reapplication are not fixed in the way they are during the test.

UVA protection needs another measurement

SPF is centred on erythema and is weighted strongly toward UVB. UVA protection is therefore evaluated separately.

ISO 24443 describes an in-vitro procedure that measures the product's spectral absorbance on a test plate and can support calculations such as UVA-PF and critical wavelength. It also notes that the result relates to local labelling requirements and that the method does not apply to pressed or loose powder products. ISO 24443

The PA system translates measured UVA-PF ranges into plus signs. Under the JCIA framework, PA++++ corresponds to UVA-PF 16 or greater. JCIA The grade remains a band: it does not reveal whether the result was 16, 20 or substantially higher.

Water resistance is an extra claim

A water-resistance claim is not automatically contained within SPF or PA. It needs its own procedure, duration and result. The practical reading is modest: a valid time-bounded claim offers more information than “sport” or “sweat-proof”, but the pack's reapplication directions still matter.

The finished product is what was tested

Protection belongs to the tested finished formula, not to a list of UV filters in isolation. A useful evidence trail should connect:

  1. the exact product name and market;
  2. the tested sample or formula identifier;
  3. the laboratory and report date;
  4. the method and edition;
  5. the numerical result and permitted label claim; and
  6. the product currently being sold.

If a brand changes the formula, manufacturer, pack or test basis, an older report may remain historically real without proving the current product.

What laboratory protection cannot predict

A compliant result does not, by itself, tell you:

  • whether a formula leaves a visible cast on a particular skin tone;
  • whether it pills over another product;
  • whether it stings around the eyes;
  • whether fragrance is tolerable;
  • whether someone will apply the tested amount evenly; or
  • how much protection remains after an untested mix of sweat, wiping and friction.

Bottom line

A sunscreen result is useful when the method, sample and claim match. Read SPF, UVA and water resistance as three related but distinct pieces of evidence, then keep everyday wear questions outside the laboratory conclusion unless they were actually tested.
