SPF, PA and UVA labels: what each one actually tells you
A consumer guide to sunscreen protection labels—separating SPF, PA, UVA and broad-spectrum claims from assumptions about wear time, finish or real-world application.

Quick answer
SPF and PA describe different tested outcomes. SPF mainly expresses protection against sunburn-producing ultraviolet radiation. PA grades a measured UVA protection factor. Neither tells you how elegant the product feels, how long your application stays intact, or whether you applied enough.
SPF is a test ratio—not a timer
The current BIS SPF method defines a product's SPF from the relationship between the ultraviolet dose that produces defined redness on protected and unprotected test sites. It is a finished-product test under specified conditions. BIS SPF method
That means SPF 50 does not mean “50 hours in the sun”. Real exposure changes with UV intensity, time of day, location, sweating, rubbing, water, missed areas and the amount applied.

What PA+, PA+++, and PA++++ mean
PA is a consumer-facing grade derived from UVA protection factor testing. The JCIA voluntary standard places measured UVAPF into four bands: JCIA

More plus signs do not reveal the exact result above the threshold. PA++++ can represent different UVAPF values, and the badge does not describe visible-light protection, water resistance or the quality of your application.
“Broad spectrum” needs its test context
Broad-spectrum wording generally signals coverage across UVA and UVB, but the test and labelling requirements behind the phrase vary by jurisdiction. For an Indian-market profile, Layer & Strand records the exact claim and any named method rather than converting it into a universal badge.
The practical read
Read four separate questions
- SPF
- What finished-product sunburn-protection result is claimed?
- UVA or PA
- What separate UVA protection information is provided?
- Water resistance
- Was a specific retained-protection claim made under stated conditions?
- Directions
- What amount, timing and reapplication does this exact product require?
Labels do not tell you everything consumers ask
Protection labels cannot establish:
- whether the product leaves a visible cast on a particular skin tone;
- whether it stings around an individual's eyes;
- whether it pills over a particular moisturiser or makeup product;
- whether a tint provides meaningful visible-light attenuation;
- whether the current Indian pack matches an international ingredient list;
- whether a person applied the tested quantity evenly.
Those questions need different evidence: controlled testing, current formula records, or documented hands-on use.
Bottom line
Read SPF, UVA or PA, water resistance and directions as separate pieces of information. A strong label can support a good decision, but it cannot rescue an uneven, insufficient or badly worn application—and it does not predict the sensory experience.
