Can you judge sunscreen protection from the ingredient list?
A filter list can reveal the intended UVA and UVB strategy, but it cannot calculate SPF, UVA-PF, photostability, water resistance or real-world wear.

No—not reliably. The ingredient list can show which filters may contribute to UVA or UVB coverage. Only finished-product testing can establish the labelled SPF, UVA result or water resistance.

What filter names can tell you
A conservative reading can identify published roles: avobenzone and DHHB are UVA filters; ethylhexyl triazone has a UVB role; bemotrizinol spans UVA and UVB; zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are particulate filters. Iron oxides are pigments, not automatic UV filters.
That is useful formula literacy. It is not a score.
Why the arithmetic shortcut fails
SPF is measured on the finished product under a specified method. BIS SPF method UVA labels also come from finished-product measurements; the PA system derives its grades from measured UVA-PF bands. JCIA PA standard
An INCI list normally omits the filter concentrations and does not show how evenly particles are dispersed, how dissolved filters are stabilised or how the dried film behaves. List order is not a substitute for those missing data.
Use the list to ask better questions
- Is there a plausible mix of declared UVA and UVB roles?
- Does the exact product make a finished broad-spectrum or UVA claim?
- Can the report be matched to the current Indian-market formula?
- Is water resistance tested when that property matters?
- Are pigments supported by visible-light evidence, or is “tinted” only a colour description?
What we could not verify
Ingredient order cannot establish exact concentration changes or rank two sunscreens. Even a technically plausible filter system can be undermined by poor film formation, mismatch between report and formula, or underapplication.
Bottom line
Read the ingredient list to understand the strategy. Read the matching test evidence to judge the protection claim.
