Quick answer
Read an anti-dandruff pack in this order: exact product name, active and strength, full ingredient declaration, directions, warnings, and pack identity. The front claim tells you the positioning; the back and side panels tell you whether two apparently similar shampoos are actually the same.
A phrase such as “advanced dandruff control” has no stable formula meaning. A useful label-reading method separates what the pack explicitly declares from what marketing invites you to assume.
1. Confirm the exact product identity
Start with the brand, full printed product name, pack size and market. Similar names can cover different strengths or formulas. Also photograph the manufacturer or marketer, barcode, batch panel and manufacturing or expiry details for your own record.
This matters when an online product page changes but an older bottle remains in circulation.
2. Find the active strategy
Look for an explicitly named active such as ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, piroctone olamine, salicylic acid or another declared anti-dandruff agent. Then ask:
- Is a concentration clearly stated?
- Is that percentage for the active itself or for a named blend?
- Is the product presented as a cosmetic shampoo, a medicated product or a drug?
- Do the directions and warnings fit that positioning?
The AAD lists several active categories used in dandruff care, but products containing them are not interchangeable. AAD
3. Read the whole ingredient declaration
For cosmetics covered by India’s Cosmetics Rules, ingredients above 1% are generally listed in descending order, while ingredients at 1% or below may appear in any order after that. The rules also provide ingredient-list exceptions for certain very small packs. Cosmetics Rules 2020
That leads to three important limits:
- Ingredient order does not reveal exact concentration.
- A change near the end of a list does not prove a meaningful concentration change.
- A missing full list does not justify claiming that an undeclared ingredient is absent when the information is partial.
Drug or medicated-product labelling can follow additional requirements. Treat the classification printed on the pack as material information rather than assuming every dandruff shampoo is a cosmetic.
4. Separate formula functions
At a glance
- Active strategy
- What is intended to address flaking or scalp scale
- Cleansing system
- Surfactants that remove oil, debris and product
- Conditioning system
- Ingredients that may improve slip or hair feel
- Fragrance declaration
- Parfum, fragrance or another declared term
- Preservation
- Ingredients that help protect the product from contamination
An ingredient can serve more than one function, and a list alone cannot predict real-world feel. Avoid labelling every unfamiliar name an “active” or every botanical a proven treatment.
5. Directions are part of the product data
Record how much to use, where to apply it, contact time, rinse instructions, frequency, repeat-wash directions and any maintenance schedule. Two shampoos with the same named active may still give materially different directions.
Do not substitute a contact time copied from another product. Follow the physical pack you possess when it is readable and current.
6. Warnings are not fine print
Check external-use warnings, eye contact, broken skin, age limits, pregnancy statements, allergy cautions and instructions to stop use. A medicinal-looking front label is not permission to improvise dose or frequency.

What we found
We keep the product identity, ingredient-list version and merchant destination separate. We preserve the exact declaration, source, Indian market, pack size and verification date. When brand-controlled sources disagree, we retain both instead of silently combining them.
You can see this approach in our Indian anti-dandruff shampoo comparison and the Re’equil ingredient-list investigation.
Bottom line
Do not judge a dandruff shampoo from the hero ingredient alone. Product identity, complete declaration, directions and warnings form one record. If the pack and online page disagree, document the conflict rather than choosing the more convenient list.
